The 2026 Reality

Solar in Hawaiʻi changed in 2026. Here is what still works.

The 30% federal solar tax credit ended December 31, 2025. We are not going to pretend otherwise — and we are not going to pressure you with fake deadlines. Here is the honest math for an Oʻahu homeowner today:

  • The 35% Hawaiʻi state RETITC is still here. Up to $5,000 per system, applied to your state income tax.
  • HECO’s BYOD Plus battery program still pays. Upfront and ongoing incentives for adding battery storage to a new or existing solar system.
  • Hawaiʻi electricity is still $0.40+ per kWh. Roughly three times the national average. Every kilowatt-hour your panels produce is a kilowatt-hour you do not buy from HECO.
  • Batteries are now the smart move. Because export rates are lower than retail rates, the savings happen when you use your own power instead of selling it back. A battery captures that value overnight.

Translation: a 10 kW solar + 10 kWh battery system on Oʻahu still typically pays itself back in 7 to 10 years, then produces effectively free power for the next 15 to 20. The path runs through batteries now — not tax credits.
